Literacy Strategies for Students with Disabilities

TEA works to ensure that all Texas students have access to high-quality reading and writing instruction and highly-effective teachers. House Bill 3 addresses key reading practices which are detailed on the TEA Reading Practices webpage.

The Texas Gateway includes content for “just-in-time” resources that you can leverage during a particular lesson, sequenced binders of instruction that you can assign to students, and self-directed professional development training courses that you can take to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit hours.  

The What Works Clearinghouse reviews the research, determines which studies meet rigorous standards, and summarizes the findings. The site focuses on high-quality research to answer the question “what works in education?”  

The Building RTI Capacity for Implementation in Texas Schools project is part of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk (MCPER) within the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin.  Explore this website to find resources to enhance RTI implementation on your campus.  

The National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL) is a partnership among literacy experts, university researchers, and technical assistance providers, with funding from the United States Department of Education.  This site includes evidence-based professional development and effective approaches to screen, identify, and teach students with literacy-related difficulties, including dyslexia. 

From translating research into practice to providing online professional development, the Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts (VGC) emphasizes scientifically based research and is dedicated to improving instruction for all students, especially struggling readers, English language learners, and special education students. 

The Texas Special Education Information Center (SPEDTex) provides resources to stakeholders across the state of Texas.  This site includes reading and academic resources. 

ESC 13 hosts this resource where accommodations based on academic and functional needs of students with disabilities can be found.   

The Middle School Matters Institute The Institute partners with the nation’s leading education researchers and practitioners and draws upon decades of high-quality research to provide excellent support and resources to middle grades schools across the nation. 

The Reading Institute, directed by Dr. Sharon Vaughn, is dedicated to understanding reading difficulties for students at all grade levels and validating evidence-based practices to prevent and remediate reading problems. The strands of research within this institute focus on adolescent literacy, English language learners, and early literacy.
